We couldn’t get enough of the well-preserved ruins, so decided to use Day 5 of the trip to travel to the nearby town of Arykanda, where there were known to be larger structures we could visit for just 5 tl. This very un-touristy area again gave us free reign over the ruins, we could climb onto, into, and over anything that we wished. It was so vast that we were able to split up and not find each other for almost half an hour.
Some of the major highlights included a roman giant theatre, a playing field, intact mosaic floors, and another turtle!

After the exhaustion set in from climbing up and down every pair of stairs in sight, we took the recommendation of the groundskeeper and headed 2km to a local restaurant for the best meal of our lives. I’m prone to exaggeration, but everyone who has been here will tell you the same. Altintas Restaurant was set next to a babble river, accessed by sturdy wooden bridges. It seemed empty as first and we were worried that they would not be prepared for 6 foreigners, but they were friendly and very welcoming.
We had the choice between fresh fish, caught in the stream near by, and chicken (that was probably very fresh too, as I saw them chicken clucking around behind the restaurant). We also order cheese stuffed mushrooms (to die for!) and a side of potatoes and tomatoes and of course tomato and cucumber salad. What we didn’t know was the piece de resistance would be arriving first – the freshly baked bread, homemade butter and cheese. If I could have this bread on my death-bed I would. It was the single most memorable food I had in turkey. We talked about this bread for days!
The meal was so well done, we were impressed beyond our expectations and even more excited about the journey that we had been on thus far and what more would come. The night was spent smoking hookah by the fire and roasting marshmallows. What more could we ask for from this perfect day?!
